the heart absconds
through veins and ventricles,
forever thirsting -

my fingers restive to release their
lachrymose grasp,

a solitary tear
shakily
rests on the fringe of my lashes,

and with a caveat of the euphorious
cessation of breath,
it falls

with a final, importunate palpitation

of my exhaustedly languished heart. 

too busy to notice half of what is happening to you
- for you -
- around you -

the smell of autumn crisp air
falling off the wrong side of summer’s eye;

glittering frost throwing street-lit reflections
across the freshly bloomed branches,

and a newly hatched chick
unequipped to make it through the night;

we should be ripping our hearts
from our warm, pulsing chests,
dripping a blanket of hope from between
our guilty fingers;

instead we fill our palms with each others’ hair
and watch with sullied eyes,

another casualty upon the frozen ground.

those blue lines, in perfect placement,
mocking my every word, brutally cheapening each
to something it was never intended to be,
(a disheartening array of a lost soul’s existence)
and lacing every line on my face with panic ridden chagrin -

as i vow to burn through the corneas and cut through
the bruises of those double-crossed by their own existence,
i scramble for the exposed pieces of me not yet
thieved and lynched by the vehemently blind.
